The principal of one city public high school spent his 40th birthday today camping out to raise awareness and funds for his school.

Mark Federman has spent the last nine days camping outside the East Side Community High School, hoping to win enough votes on Facebook to be one of the 20 winners of the Kohl's Cares $10 million give away.

He has been living in his tent in front of the school on East 12th Street.

Federman has been joined by some students and teachers. As of the last count, they were in 33rd place, needing about 60,000 votes to break into the top 20.

"What we've modeled to our kids is 'you never give up' and we're gonna keep fighting and we're gonna ask people to come out and support us,” Federman said. “And the truth is, we desperately need this money. We're a school and I think people recognize that, so we're just asking and begging people to come out and saying really the five votes for East Side are five votes for urban public education."

You can vote for East Side up to five times by going to VoteforEastSide.com.

The contest ends on September 3rd.
