Edible Magazine's Rachel Wharton recently checked out a local catering company that has its own organic farm and filed the following report.Liz Neumark's Manhattan catering company has its very own organic farm, a 60-acre space called Katchkie.
"We bought the land in '06 and 2007 was our first growing season. And why did we buy a farm? Because we just are a little crazy, and we also wanted to connect to the basic building blocks of food, and that's farming," explains Neumark.
In the city Neumark serves her produce to customers, sells it at the greenmarket and uses it in cooking classes for kids. But this year she suggests you come visit the chickens, hiking trails and fishing pond. In fact, this May 15th is the annual spring planting party.
"It's going to be an absolutely beautiful day. With any luck our outdoor pizza oven will be working so once you put your hard hours of blissful toil in on the land you can come have a little picnic and pizza," says Neumark.
You can also find Katchkie Farm this weekend at the Green Getaways Expo at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. They’ll be joined by dozens of other New York State growers, winemakers and cheesemongers that open up their farms so you can see what they do.
"I find that when our city visitors come to the farm they're just filled with a sense of wonderment and it really makes me feel strongly about city people coming to the farms, seeing where their food comes from and that it’s not just a commodity that appears in your supermarket," says Neumark.
And don’t worry, even if you’re too lazy to cook or to travel, you can always find Katchkie canned goods in Manhattan. The best are the Thunder Pickles named after Neumark’s own childhood trips to a farm.
When I was a little girl, the farmer lived down the road from me told us that thunder makes the cucumbers grow," says Neumark.
