Members of the LGBT community gathered in East Harlem on Thursday to demand justice for one of their own.
The rally was held in honor of Camila Guzman, a transgender woman who emigrated from Chile, was found stabbed to death in her apartment on August 1.
Organizers of the rally said not enough is being done to prevent violence against the LGBT community.
"We think that violence against transgender women of color and transgender people in general is usually under-reported and not highly seen in the media," said Ejeris Dixon of Anti-Violence Project.
"We're seeing just too much violence going on in our neighborhoods. And particularly violence that is fueled by hate is violence that is completely unacceptable," said City Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito.
"If we remain quiet, more violence happens. We need to stand together. We need to march. We need to speak loudly. We need to speak forcefully," said State Senator JOse M. Serrano.
Camila Guzman's killer has yet to be caught.
