An elevator in a Queens building that was supposed to be out of service collapsed Friday night shortly after some people used it, but nobody was hurt.

“It was just like boom, you know?” said one resident.

Residents at the Cadillac building on 83rd Avenue are thankful no one was hurt or killed when debris apparently fell from a high floor and crashed through the elevator.

“We were all very concerned because we all use the elevator. It's very heavily used,” said one resident.

Shaun Broughton said he was stuck in the same elevator for 45 minutes last Saturday. He first thought of the advertising executive who was killed in an elevator accident as she arrived for at her Midtown office last month.

“What if this thing just drops? What happens to me? Do I die like this woman did? Of course it went through my mind,” said Broughton.

After he got out, Broughton said there were signs not to use the elevator, but by Monday they were gone and it was back to business as usual with residents using the elevator.

“People were still using it. Nobody said anything,” said Broughton.

NY1 has reached out the Department of Buildings for comment about the incident.

There was a notice of violation next to the elevator which cited a failure to maintain the elevator. It also said all use should be ceased.

“I think Saturday's incident was just disregarded,” said Broughton.

“There have been problems in the past. Hopefully it will be looked at a little more,” said one resident.

A hearing on this violation is scheduled for March 3.
