For weeks, the bus drivers' union said that inefficient bus routes and costs related to special education students are behind the uptick in yellow bus expenses, not workers' wages.
New data released by the city Friday evening may add some support to those claims.
The data shows that many school buses carry few passengers.
Twenty-seven buses are assigned to just one student.
Two hundred buses transport fewer than three students, and 376 buses have fewer than five students scheduled to be onboard.
While Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Chancellor Dennis Walcott repeatedly claim that New York spends significantly more than any other city on school busing, that turns out to only be true when it comes to special education students.
For students without special needs, Chicago and Los Angeles spend about the same per student as New York.
