Tenants in a Harlem public housing complex have been living without gas for almost three months and have no idea when they will get it back. NY1's Susan Jhun filed the following NY1 For You report.

The residents at The Taft Houses in Harlem say the New York City Housing Authority has left them without health for about three months.

"Since February we’ve had no gas. I have two children and it’s hard," says resident Estella Saliva.

"Right now, I’m unemployed and I can’t keep buying food in the street," says resident Sandra Walden.

Elderly, sick residents are concerned about the physical and financial toll it's taking on them.

"I live on Social Security, and I don’t have no money," says Flores.

Residents say that NYCHA has provided them with hot plates but they say they are dangerous.

"My granddaughter used it the other day, she was frying something, and it caught on fire," says Saliva.

"The majority of the time, the hot plate, if you don’t put it in a specific way, it will tilt over," says resident Maria Flores.

NY1 reached out to NYCHA and a spokesperson told the station that in the process of trying to install new stoves in the complex, the agency's workers found an unsafe gas situation that they have been trying to address as quickly as possible.

The spokesperson released a statement that says, “NYCHA apologizes for this great inconvenience to the residents of Taft Houses. We are working diligently to remedy this situation as quickly and as safely as possible. The Housing Authority is in constant communication with the Resident Association President and has scheduled a resident meeting for April 21 to provide an update to all affected residents.”

In the meantime, residents say they will continue to suffer as they head towards their third month without gas.

NY1 will continue to follow this situation.
