Harlem residents at 722 Nicholas Avenue have been without gas since an August water main break, and now they say that even heat and hot water aren’t reliable. NY1's Anthony Pascale filed the following NY1 For You report.

Residents at 772 Nicholas Avenue in Harlem haven't had gas since a water main broke in their neighborhood this past August.

“I find this situation humiliating. Humiliating. Dehumanizing,” says resident Monty Mason.

“Stressful? Beyond stressful, beyond,” says resident Jamora Allen.

“We need some help,” says resident Emily Garcia.

According to officials at the Department of Housing, Preservation and Development, the department’s Emergency Repair Program staff is monitoring the issue and it appears that the owner is making repairs.

When NY1 reached out to the landlord of the building, Evita Realty Corp, representatives said that the building's pipes were damaged from the water main break and plumbers have been on-site daily to work on the problem.

Residents say otherwise.

“What happened is that every time he had somebody do the job and they supposedly repaired it, Con Ed would come to do the investigation and come to find out that the building failed,” says resident Larry Holmes.

Until the gas comes back, residents have hot plates to cook on.

“They did give us hot plates, but they don't work. They blow out,” says Holmes.

“It's a very bad experience when you got to cook for your family,” says resident Zonya Bucknor.

It's not only the lack of gas that's frustrating the residents. For some, heat and hot water are also fleeting utilities.

“Sometime we don't have hot water, water is cold,” says Bucknor.

“It's really hard when you're trying to take a shower and there's no hot water and then there's no gas to heat up the water,” says resident Yenifet Acosta.

When NY1 asked Evita Realty about the heat and hot water situation, representatives said that they haven't received any complaints or calls, but they were willing to look into it. As for the residents, they can't bear to wait any longer.

“Christmas coming. Thanksgiving coming. What are you going to do with your family?” says Bucknor.

“It was just me, I could finagle with it, but my son, he's only three. It's not fair to him,” says Allen.

NY1 will continue to follow this story.
