1869...Famed actor Edwin Booth opens a theater on 23rd Street and Sixth Avenue. It's an overnight hit, but Booth goes bankrupt in the panic of 1873.

1913...Democracy strikes the pocketbook when a Constitutional amendment creating the Federal Income Tax is ratified. The law requires everyone – from Fifth Avenue millionaires to tenement dwellers – to shell out to Uncle Sam.
