Seniors at one center on the Upper West Side are happy and no longer hungry after they turned to "NY1 For You" for help. NY1's Susan Jhun filed the following report.

Cheers of happiness recently filled The Association of Black Social Workers Senior Citizens Center, where gas to the kitchen has finally been restored after a month and a half without it.

"We are all happy that you all helped all of us," said senior Olivia Baldwin.

NY1 first reported last week about the center in the basement of The Ascension Church on 107th Street, which has been serving seniors in the Upper West Side neighborhood since 1975.

Late last month, the church, a landlord for the center, informed the seniors there was a gas leak and shut off the gas in the kitchen, taking away hot, healthy and affordable meals, forcing the seniors to go elsewhere.

"Once you've been here for nine years and do this and it is taken away and then you realize what you have here," said senior Margaret Monod Kelly.

"This has disrupted the whole gamut of our program," said ABSW Executive Director Steven Adeyinka.

NY1 called the church and the city Department of Buildings and a few days later the gas was turned back on -- much to the delight of those at the senior center who are just happy once again to have their hot meals.
