1804...Alexander Hamilton is killed defending his honor against political rival Aaron Burr. Because New York forbids dueling, the fight takes place in Weehaken, New Jersey. Hamilton is buried in the Trinity Church graveyard in Manhattan.

1936...Some 15,000 people turn out in the midst of a blistering heat wave for the opening of the Triboro Bridge.

1939...The American League beats the National League, 3-1, in the All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium. An ailing Lou Gehrig serves as the non-playing captain of the AL team, which boats six Yankee players.
