1953...Tokens are introduced on city subways and buses, as the 10-cent fare jumps to 15 cents.

1956...Fifty-three lives are lost when the Italian luxury liner Andrea Doria, en route to New York, collides with the cruise ship Stokholm in dense fog off Nantucket Island. The first SOS reaches the Coast Guard station in East Moriches, Long Island, and an armada of ships is dispatched to rescue more than 700 passengers.

1966...Former Yankee and Met manager Casey Stengel is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

1975..."A Chorus Line" debuts on Broadway. The iconic show will run for 6,137 performances, making it the longest-running Broadway production up to that time.
