1788...New York becomes the eleventh state in the Union to ratify the U.S. Constitution.

1917...Manhattan's last horse-drawn trolley, the Bleecker Street/Broadway trolley, makes its final run before being replaced by the electrified streetcar and subway.

1999...It's the end of the road for another New York City institution as the last remaining Checker Cab is officially retired, bowing out to a fleet of smaller, more fuel-efficient taxicabs.
