His clothes have been described as ethereal and elegant. Now the fashion world is mourning the loss of one of its greats, Oscar de la Renta. NY1's Roma Torre filed the following report.

His designs have been seen on the red carpet and in the White House. Oscar de la Renta has dressed countless leading ladies over his long career.

Now, it will all become part of his legacy.

The world-famous designer died Monday night. He was 82.

"Elegant women all over the world wore Oscar de la Renta. It's such a great loss to the world and of course the fashion community," says fashion expert George Brescia.

De la Renta's stepdaughter Eliza Reed Bolen and her husband Alex signed a handwritten statement posted online saying the designer died in his Connecticut home "surrounded by family" and "more than a few dogs."

They say he'd been battling cancer for eight years.

De la Renta was born in the Dominican Republic before moving to New York, where he launched his label in 1965.

It didn't take long to make a name for himself. He quickly became known for his evening wear, famously worn by celebrities and socialites for more than 40 years.

"He's built a reputation as the American designer whose best known for feminine, romantic, beautiful clothes," says Fashion Insitute of Technology Chief Curator Valerie Steele.

De la Renta stepped down as chief executive of his company in 2004, but his work continued.

He most recently designed the wedding dress for George Clooney's wife, Amal.

"He really brought fantasy to life in a way that I've never seen another designer do with such elegance and refinement," says ELLE Fashion News Director Anne Slowey.

De la Renta's family say they'll carry on his work.

They write: "We will make Oscar very proud of us by continuing in an even stronger way the work that Oscar loved so much."

"I have fun doing it," de la Renta said in an earlier interview.

De la Renta is also survived by an adopted son, Moises, who is a designer with the company.
