Blackberry is hoping to lure back smartphone users by offering up a brand new, old phone. NY1’s Adam Balkin filed this report.

No, we didn't mistakenly plug a tech segment from seven years ago into our news rundown down here. Blackberry is trying to regain some of its old, smartphone dominance by bringing back an updated version of its old device or as the company prefers to call it, the Blackberry Classic. It is bigger, faster, more powerful than Blackberries of the past, can run Blackberry World or Amazon App Store apps, but the big bet here, people once loved and will once again love that almost legendary keyboard.

“I know a lot of people think that Classics are aiming at our loyal customers, which is true. That was the genesis of why we are doing this. But I’m going to invite a lot of people who haven’t used the Classic or haven’t used a Blackberry before, especially the people that are young, I suppose, to have a try at it. I think you’ll like it, you may surprise yourself," says Blackberry CEO John Chen.

For loyal Blackberry business users, this will without a doubt be a hit. However, is it realistic to believe that younger users will be willing to ditch their full screen, touch screen devices for one of these?

“If all you’re doing with your device is using that physical keyboard then this is actually going to be a fantastic product for you. But if you’re a consumer and you’re very app-centric and you want to have a large display for media playback, this isn’t the right device for you," says Avi Greengart, Analyst at Current Analysis.

Blackberry Classic is on sale now for about $450 for AT&T and Verizon customers.
