Go green for your next caffeine fix at the city's first matcha bar. Zagat editor Molly Moker filed this report for NY1.

We went to New York City's first matcha bar, in Williamsburg, to try the newest green drink in town.

Health nuts and caffeine fiends, rejoice. NYC's first matcha cafe is serving amped up green tea like you've never had before.

"Matcha's basically the finest leaves from the very top of the green tea plant. What we do is we take those leaves, grind them in a stone mill grinder to make an electric green powder. The advantage of drinking the powder is you're really consuming the entire leaf of the tea. You're getting about ten times amount of antioxidants, more caffeine, and all the vitamins in green tea taken to another level basically because you're consuming the entire leaf," says co-owner Max Fortgang.

Max and his brother Graham opend Matchabar after getting into the powdered green tea while attending NYU.

"We were looking for an alternative energy source, drinking way too much coffee. We were like, 'This is not a sustainable way.' We needed to find something that had a kick, you know, to get us really going in the morning and we found matcha and we really haven't looked back since," he says.

Here's how a hot tea is prepared. The green tea powder, which is sourced from a farm in Japan, is sifted then blended with water in a beverage mixer until there's a nice froth on top."

Moker: "It definitely tastes way healthier than normal green tea, which is strange because green tea is healthy in itself. It almost tastes like a mix between wheat grass and green tea in a way."
Fortgang: "Well you're tasting the leaf itself."
Moker:"I definitely feel like I'm doing myself a solid by drinking one of these."

After slamming two cups of matcha at 9 a.m., I was buzzing until bedtime.

In hot water isn’t the only way you can get your matcha fix at MatchaBar; try it with watermelon juice or hemp milk, or even in a donut.
