Just 15 days before New Year's Eve, the city is wasting no time preparing for the big celebration in Times Square.

The giant one and zero in the "2010" sign were delivered by pedicab Wednesday to the Duracell Smart Power Lab in Midtown.

This year, the numbers will be lit by light-emitting diode bulbs instead of halogen bulbs.

"These nine-watt bulbs are replacing the old 40-watt bulbs, which means that we're actually saving about 36 trees by using these new LED bulbs by Phillips," said President Jeffrey Straus of Countdown Entertainment.

"That cutting edge technology mixed with the tradition of New Year's Eve is going to make this New Year's Eve celebration even more special," said Tim Tompkins of the Times Square Alliance.

The 2010 sign will be on display at the Duracell Smart Power Lab for one week. There, visitors are invited to push pedals to create energy that's being converted into power for batteries that will light the numerals as the ball comes down. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
