Five years after she went missing, a Colorado cat that wound up in New York was finally reunited with her family Friday.

Willow was matched with her family thanks to a microchip implanted when she was a kitten.

She made it about 1,800 miles from Boulder and was found last week on East 20th Street.

Her family said they had given up hope they would see their cat long ago.

Now they are encouraging everyone to get microchips for their pets.

"It's mind blowing, it's surreal. It still is. It's so great to get her back," said owner Chris Squires.

"These microchips really do work, and the education needs to be brought a lot more to light about how well they do work," said owner Jamies Squires.

The family dismissed rumors of a book deal for Willow but said any proceeds they did make from Willow's story would go toward educating pet owners about microchips.
