After spending a week with Cardinal Timothy Dolan in the Vatican City, NY1's Vivian Lee got to speak with the proud new cardinal, hours after Pope Benedict XVI elevated him to the prestigious role.

Timothy Dolan from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York was just an archbishop when he bounded up to Pope Benedict XVI, but within seconds he became a cardinal.

Now a prince of the Catholic Church, after the elaborate elevation ceremony at St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City, Cardinal Timothy Dolan told reporters on Saturday that nothing much would change.

"It's all about humility and service and love and staying close to God and people. That's what it's about. It's not about power and prestige," said Dolan.

But for his family and friends, Dolan's new importance within the church hierarchy as an elector of the next pope is undeniable.

Dolan joked it was slightly nerve-wracking.

"I just was just afraid I was going to trip," said Dolan. "I did have a little trouble getting the ring on the finger, which was a little embarrassing."

Then hundreds of pilgrims came, awaiting their chance to enter the Vatican City to spend a few moments with Dolan. Some said the moment of touching a cardinal was a chance to get closer to heaven, or at least try to.

"Very jubilant, that's how I felt he was and he made us feel the same way," said a pilgrim.

Sister Mary Bosco taught Dolan when he was just eight years old, and helped him learn how to serve Mass.

"I feel grateful and I feel proud that I was an instrument in God's hands in helping him along the way," said Bosco.

Now, Dolan's way could very well include voting for the next pontiff, and there is even talk that Dolan may one day be pope himself. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
