One of the city's first "green" office buildings has gained some federal recognition.

The Manhattan headquarters of the Hearst Corporation announced Monday it has been given both LEED gold and platinum ratings for its sustainable operations by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Hearst Tower was one of the first green office buildings in 2006.

Since then, the tower has reduced energy consumption by 40 percent, and reduced total landfill waste by 82 percent.

The building also composts 100 percent of its wet food waste.

The praise comes as the company marks its 125th anniversary. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
