About 2,500 school children are taking part today in the Mighty Milers Run at Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island, as part of celebrations for National Running Day.
U.S. Olympic competitor Desiree Davila is among those coaching the young athletes at the event, which is hosted by the New York Road Runners.
"The idea is simply start easy. Walk a few minutes, run a minute. Then over time, increase the running minutes, decrease the walking minutes," said NYRR CEO and President Mary Wittenberg.
"We have a fitness program at the Department of Education and part of that is our partnership with the New York Road Runners and all the outstanding things they do," said Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott.
