Jamaica's prime minister was the guest of honor at a Midtown gala on Saturday night celebrating the country's musical and theatrical history of the last half-century.

The country marked 50 years of independence earlier this month.

"This is just a great opportunity to celebrate the fact that all Jamaicans throughout the diaspora are successful people. And we're all Jamaicans working together toward one goal," said Queens Councilman Leroy Comrie. "It's one of the greatest nations in the Caribbean. I'm proud to say it's a country of my heritage."

"It's a great time for Jamaica — our 50th anniversary, our wonderful athletes at the Olympics and just a great crowd in New York City," said Dr. Millicent Comrie, an obstetrician.

The celebration goes on Sunday with an afternoon of reggae music in Central Park. The event is being held at SummerStage at Rumsey Playfield from 3 to 7 p.m. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
