Some prominent New Yorkers helped homeless locals enjoy a Thanksgiving feast at the New York City Rescue Mission's 12th annual "Great Thanksgiving Banquet" in Downtown Manhattan on Monday.

Volunteer servers included Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, actor Susan Sarandon and former Mayor David Dinkins.

"Thanksgiving can be a tough holiday for people who are homeless. They're away from family often, don't have friends around," said Seth Diamond, the commissioner of the Department of Homeless Services. "They can't have some of the things all New Yorkers take for granted — a turkey meal, a wonderful dinner surrounded by people they love. This is an effort to do that and to show that there are many New Yorkers who care."

The Department of Homeless Services says its facilities are open 24 hours, seven days a week through Thanksgiving for those in need. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
