A Queens school still shut down as a result of Hurricane Sandy came up with a fun idea for the first parent-teacher conferences of the year.

Scholars' Academy's middle and high schools in Rockaway Park are both still closed for repairs, with most students being relocated to Brooklyn, so school officials decided to invite parents to meet them at the Aviator Recreation Complex at Floyd Bennett Field.

Parents could talk with teachers, pick up free school supplies, and then go ice skating or rock climbing.

"They've done a phenomenal, phenomenal job," said one parent. "It's organized. Everyone's come together. As you can tell, there's balloons in the background. It's just, everything that they do, everything that Mr. O'Connell does and his staff does, is just fantastic."

"We're scholar strong, we're Rockaway resilient, and the PTA and Scholars' Academy and our teaching staffs, we've jelled and meshed so powerfully as a result of the storm," said Brian O'Connell, the principal of Scholars' Academy. "It's been a blessing. It's been a silver lining in this very dark cloud."

Principal O'Connell said he wants to have a similar event in the spring, coupled with an ice skating fundraiser. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
