Senator Charles Schumer visited a Manhattan veterans hospital shut down by Hurricane Sandy Sunday to continue to push for the passage of a relief bill in Washington.

Schumer toured the devastated VA Medical Center on the East Side.

Flooding caused all the major utility systems that service the building to fail.

More than 150,000 square feet of outpatient and support areas were destroyed, as well as important medical equipment.

"We are here today, united as business leaders, homeowners, veterans, to say we need help," Schumer said. "The classic example of what we're going through is this veterans hospital. It's closed."

"There are tens of thousands of veterans in Manhattan, and they are right now having to go to hospitals that are much farther away from their home in order to get care," said Phoebe Gavin, a U.S. Army veteran.
