A man is under arrest after police allege he set an American flag on fire outside a Midtown bar.

Police say the man seen in the image above, taken from surveillance video, is Jeffery Schorfheide, 26.

He allegedly spent nearly 18 minutes trying to ignite the flameproof flag with a cigarette lighter outside the Playwright Bar and Restaurant early Friday morning.

The manager, Kimberly Kolbert, said the fire caused thousands in damage to the bar's awning.

"The guy literally watched the awning go on fire," Kolbert said. "He steps back, he takes a cigarette, he watches it. He takes pictures of it with his phone and then walks away."

No one was hurt.

Schorfheide faces felony charges of reckless endangerment as a hate crime, criminal mischief and arson.

The owner was displaying the flag to celebrate his recent U.S. citizenship.
