A 7-year-old child visiting from Florida is recovering after falling six stories from a Brooklyn apartment building.
Police say residents discovered the young girl around 8 p.m. Wednesday outside 3194 Bayview Avenue in Coney Island.
Police say she suffered a broken pelvis and fractured ribs, among other injuries.
She was taken to Lutheran Medical Center where she is listed in critical condition.
Witnesses say the girl was trying to stand up, but kept falling.
"I said, 'Oh my God, it's a child.' So my husband jumped across the fence and I ran through the building" said Regina Speller, a witness. "When I got to her, she was falling, and I caught her and laid her down, and I laid on top of her because she kept trying to get up."
Deloris Johnson, another witness, said she yelled up to the family.
"'Somebody just fell out your window.' And she looked out of one of the bedrooms, and then, when she went out of one of the bedrooms, she went to the other bedroom, and she looked out the window, and she seen it was the little girl, and they came running downstairs," Johnson said.
Sources say police are looking into possible evidence of physical and sexual abuse.
According to sources, they found possible traces of drugs in her system, including marijuana and methadone.
The 7-year-old and her stepmother were staying with tenants in the building at the time of the incident, according to sources.
Sources say the girl ran away from an apartment in the building several hours before the incident and was found nearby.
According to sources, the people who found the girl said she said she was running away because the family said they were going to send her to Haiti.
Police returned the girl to the apartment and said everything seemed OK, according to sources.
Sources say the girl's fall occurred a short time later.
The city Administration for Children's Services says a 1-year-old boy, who was also staying in the apartment, was taken into custody.
An investigation is ongoing.
