The Central Park Zoo is mourning the loss of one of its most popular residents.
Gus, the beloved polar bear, was euthanized Tuesday after veterinarians found a large, inoperable tumor in his thyroid region.
Gus had been experiencing difficulty chewing and swallowing his food.
He was born in captivity in the Toledo Zoo in 1985 and came to the Central Park Zoo in 1988.
The median life expectancy for a male polar bear in zoos is 20 years, according to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
Gus was 27.
