The 51st annual New York Film Festival got off to a star-studded start Friday night, as Hollywood's finest hit the red carpet at Lincoln Center.

"Captain Phillips" was the first film that premiered at the festival.

It's based on the 2009 hijacking of a U.S. freighter by Somali pirates.

Tom Hanks stars as Captain Phillips.

The movie is directed by Paul Greengrass, who's known for bringing real-life tales to the big screen. For Tom Hanks, that posed particular challenges.

"Paul's desire from the get go, because he was a documentarian for a while, I think was capturing everything, what happened in the real place, the procedure, the behavior as much as possible," Hanks said. "You sort of might have to remake all your movie-making chops in order to live up to that."

The New York Film Festival runs through October 13.

Tickets are still available at filmlinc.com.

NY1 will have special coverage daily.
