A judge has ordered the prime suspect in the 1979 disappearance of Etan Patz to answer pretrial questions in a civil suit or else be declared responsible for the boy's death.

Patz was six years old when he vanished on the way to his school bus stop in SoHo 24 years ago. His case prompted a nationwide effort to recover missing children, including the practice of printing faces on milk cartons.

Jose Ramos, who dated the boy’s babysitter, is suspected in his presumed death, but prosecutors have never been able to gather enough evidence for an indictment. Patz’s parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Ramos two years ago.

Ramos, who is serving a 20-year sentence in Pennsylvania on unrelated pedophile charges, refused to speak during an interview last summer. If he doesn’t answer the questions of a Patz family lawyer, a judge has ruled, Ramos will be held liable for civil damages.
