The New York City Police Department says an officer was critically injured Thursday after being attacked by an ax-wielding man in Queens.

The incident took place around 2 p.m. near Jamaica Avenue and 162nd Street.

Police Commissioner William Bratton says it all began when two uniformed officers assigned to the 103rd precinct were asked to pose for a picture by a freelance photographer. An unidentified male then charged at the officers, striking one in the arm with the hatchet.

Bratton says the suspect continued swinging his weapon and struck a second officer in the back of his head.

Two officers who were on an adjacent foot post immediately approached the scene and fired multiple shots at the suspect, killing him.

A 29-year-old female bystander was accidentally struck in the lower back.

Both the wounded officers and bystander were transported to Jamaica Hospital.

All three are expected to recover.
