The family of Eric Garner is suing the city for $75 million over his death, but now City Comptroller Scott Stringer is looking into a possible settlement.

Stringer says an early settlement with Garner's family could ultimately save the city money by avoiding what could be a long civil trial.

"Obviously because there is a claim -- the claim with the Garner family is now before my office -- I also have to be impartial and do everything I can to make sure everyone feels that I'm acting in the best interest of the city as well as the family," Stringer said.

The lawsuit was filed before a Staten Island grand jury declined to indict Officer Daniel Pantaleo on criminal charges in Garner's death.
