With his lawyers by his side, his words carefully chosen, Jateik Reed says he can't trust the New York Police Department after what happened to him back in January.

While officers were arresting him, he was hit with batons, punched and kicked repeatedly by at least six officers.

Reed said he did nothing to provoke the blows he received from officers. He said that from here, he would move forward by going back to school.

Reed was initially charged with drug possession, assaulting an officer and resisting arrest. All of those charges were dropped.

"When I come outside, I don't feel safe no more," Reed said. "How am I supposed to feel safe when I come outside and this happened from the people that is supposed to help us?"

On Friday, Reed had to appear in court for other alleged crimes he's committed, including the theft of an iPhone.

He was charged with that crime soon after his altercation with cops.

His defense lawyers argue it's a phony case to cover the abuse.

"We have a concern that the arrests are attempts by police to further discredit him," said Michael Warren, one of Reed's attorneys. "We have advised him that he has to be very careful given the current climate that surrounds him in particular."

While in court, the prosecutor said the 19-year-old is constantly in trouble, including taking part in a big fight outside the courthouse last week.

"The defendant was arrested for another misdemeanor, possession of a weapon, fourth degree," he said. (The weapon was a garbage can lid.)

The judge had a warning for Reed.

"New arrests will cause the court to re-evaluate the bail," he said.

Reed's mother, Schuan, says she's trying to keep him out of trouble and away from cops.

I try to keep him under wraps," she said. "But at the same time, he is a teenager. He needs air to breathe and move around too. I don't like to keep him confined but I feel that is what I have to do right now."

With the beating incident caught on at least three cameras, Reed is planning a lawsuit against the police department.
