The first ever "Respect for All Week" is now underway at city schools.

Chancellor Joel Klein and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn kicked off the program at PS 24 in Brooklyn.

The program will teach the importance of respect and fostering an all-inclusive learning environment for all students, regardless of race, religion, disability and sexual orientation.

"This is a consistent effort. It's not just a response to a spike or one incident this is a multi-year commitment," Quinn said.

"All hands on deck for this to make sure that respect for all is not a motto but is a way that we live and practice in this city, in our schools," Klein said.

Students this week will participate in presentations, performances, and art projects to get a better understanding of diversity issues.
