A Bronx principal accused of making sexual comments about a copier in front of female staff members is getting reassigned to a different school and demoted to assistant principal.
John Chase, who was in his first year as principal, alerted students at Bronxdale High School on Tuesday that he and the Department of Education came to a "mutual decision" that he should serve as assistant principal at a yet-to-be-determined school.
DOE officials say there was no formal disciplinary hearing.
"It was just an agreement that it would be best for him to do it right now," said Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott on Tuesday night.
According to a report by the Department of Education's Office of Equal Opportunity, Chase told female staffers at least twice last year that a school copy machine could perform oral sex on him.
After the report came out in November, Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott let Chase keep his job. The accused principal received a letter of reprimand and was forced to undergo sensitivity training.
"We're going to make sure he goes for the appropriate training, but at the same time we have an investment to make as far as leadership is concerned," Walcott said in January.
In January, a rally against Chase was organized by the teachers' union and the National Organization for Women, and several elected officials attended or sent representatives. But most of the protestors were teachers at other Bronx high schools.
DOE officials say a new accusation was made against Chase last month, but Walcott said Tuesday night that the unproven allegation did not influence the DOE's decision.
"Any new accusations we'll investigate," the chancellor said.
Bronxdale High staff members who spoke with NY1 said the tension with Chase has not gone away and that the principal seemed determined to stick it out. They said they were surprised he agreed to step down now.
