Healthy skin is always a big concern for most people, especially as the cold weather moves in. NY1 Health & Fitness reporter Kafi Drexel discovered ways to protect your skin, without spending a lot of cash.

You don't have to go for the department store luxury brands to help your skin glow. Dermatologist Dr. Heidi Waldorf of Mt. Sinai Medical Center says you can find the same quality products in the aisles of your local grocery and drug stores, and for a whole lot less.

According to Waldorf, the first major product you can save on is cleanser, which often runs between $30 and $50 in the department store, compared to $5 to $10, and often at a much larger size, in the drug store.

“We tend to use a lot of cleanser. We use it twice a day. So that's something you can save money on,” she says. “What you use depends on how much make up you wear on a daily basis. If you wear heavy makeup, you might want something like Abolene, which a lot of theater people use. Or if you wear light makeup, you can get away with Cerave or Cetaphil.”

Another area where you can save without skimping is on body wash. Waldorf say it's best to look for the products with moisturizing agents.

“You can use these and they won't strip moisture. Especially as we enter the winter months, taking care of your skin from the time you take your shower is very important,” she says. “So avoid the antiperspirant wash and use something gentle that will not strip your skin.”

One of the biggest areas where people are spending is on anti-wrinkle creams. The only problem is, some products can put an even bigger wrinkle in your budget.

“In terms of department store brands, there are some items that are good. But you can do just as well in the drug store,” says Waldorf. “The key for anti-aging protocol is to use a retinoid. Retinoids are those vitamin-A derivatives that we know do more for anti aging than anything else.”

Drug store brands like Olay Pro X can run just over $70 for a kit, but Waldorf says that's still a better deal than some department store brands which run between $100 and $200.

Waldorf says another big way to save this winter is through moisturizer. For an inexpensive staple, she points to the classic Vaseline brand that has some new skincare technology with its "Sheer Infusion" line.

“It's very inexpensive body moisturizer that feels sheer. But it's very efficacious because it has glycerin, which is a humectant, to hold in moisture,” she says. “But the glycerin in this product has four times the moisture than normal glycerin. So it will keep you moisturized longer, but feel sheer.”

These are all great tips to keep in mind to prevent yourself from breaking out – of your budget.
