The group "Project Trio" is redefining instrumental music and they don't mind taking their musical revolution to the streets. Especially because that's where they find much of their inspiration.

"We're taking from our classical roots and adding to it, elements of jazz and hip-hop and rock and salsa and anything that we can add to it, sounds of today, sounds of the streets of New York and bringing that into kind of our classical training to create a really unique sound, which is 'Project Trio,'" said "Project Trio" bassist Peter Seymour.

Peter Seymour, Greg Pattillo and Eric Stephenson met while studying at the Cleveland Institute of Music. But for the past five years they've been living in Brooklyn and performing their unique sound all over the world: A sound that includes Greg doing the human beat box on his flute.

"I started to learn a little bit about beat boxing and slowly threw a couple of tricks into my flute playing, and now I got kind of a hybrid monster," Pattillo said.

"These instruments are capable of so many different colors sounds, and banging on them is just outshoot of wanting to create rhythmic sounds with a string instrument," Stephenson said.

In the spirit of improvisation, instead of hanging out in the basement of their DUMBO studio, the guys recently decided to come out to Water Street and put on a mini public concert.

"Project Trio" has a new CD out and they will be performing at Joe's Pub on May 23. But maybe you can find them somewhere before then. The guys say all they need is a chair for the cellist and they're ready to jam just about anywhere, because their mission is to bring music to the people.
