A new report has found that this year's flu shot failed to protect many seniors from the most dangerous and common strain of the flu.

Health officials with the Centers for Disease Control said that this year's flu vaccine was just 9 percent effective in preventing people 65 and older from contracting the strain of flu responsible for most of this year's illnesses.

That's compared to 56 percent across all age groups, a rate that's in line with previous flu seasons.

Experts said that the preliminary results are disappointing, though health officials stressed that any protection is better than none at all.
