1774...The first American-born saint, Mother Elizabeth Ann Seton, is born in Lower Manhattan.

1922...The first radio commercial airs on radio station WEAF, now WFAN. The spot is ten minutes long and plugs the Garden Apartments in Jackson Heights.

1991...A drunk subway motorman speeds into the Union Square station on the No. 4 line, derailing his train and killing six passengers. The operator, Robert Ray, is convicted on five manslaughter charges.
