The Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum is encouraging children to let their minds soar during winter break.

It's kids week at the Intrepid, and on Monday visitors were treated to a Space and Aviation day.

Astronauts talked about their time in space and how what was once science fiction can become science fact.

The Intrepid is also serving as the launching pad for the "Wouldn't It Be Cool If" contest sponsored by Time Warner Cable's "Connect a Million Minds" initiative.

From a machine that could turn rain into ice cream to cars with wings, kids let their imaginations take flight.

"I'm working on me laying down on the bed and my robot is doing work for me, how to take notes for my science projects," said one youngster.

"In countries like Australia, or Finland, or South Korea; being great at math or winning the science fair, is a highly respected cool thing to do. And in or culture we need to adapt and bring that into our youth culture," said Time Warner Cable Vice President of Communications Bobby Amirshahi.

The contest runs through March 28.
