Fashion Week 2012: Yeohlee Celebrates Math While Walter Mixes Fabrics

Mixed colors and textures were the stars of the runway this season. NY1's Michelle Park went behind the scenes at the Walter and Yeohlee fall fashion presentations. Designer Yeohlee Teng presented just seven looks during her fall presentation at her showroom in Midtown. The show was short but not quite simple.
"The inspiration was the magic of mathematics. You know, I love geometry and math is the foundation of all design," says Teng.
Teng says the shapes of her creations were inspired by the Venn diagram. But the standout this season was the color, much more than we usually see from this designer, and the luscious hues were also borne of academic memories.
"When I was in primary school, that's what we called it, I had a maroon uniform that was pleated with a little white collar. The color palette reminded me of that," says Teng.
Purple, acid green and blue added some finesse and depth to the looks. The fabrics acted as the backbone, giving Teng's pieces hard and soft edges.
Teng says an important fact about those materials is that they are all made in New York City
"To help re-envision the Garment District, so that there will be a great future for fashion design in the city, that's supported by the manufacturing aspect of it," says Teng.
The Walter collection this season was all about fun and flirty, with a lot of rich colors and interesting textures.
"A lot of mixed fabrications, clay, tweed, shearling, leather, embossed, crocodile. Everything mixed together," says designer Walter Baker.
This fall, it will be all about the mixed prints and fabrics, but Baker paired the trendy with the classics.
"It's inspired by the '60s. It's got a minimalistic, cool look. Think James Bond, think retro," says Baker.
It was certainly a party-like atmosphere at the presentation at the Empire Hotel. Celebrities, socialites and even some sports stars made an appearance.
"This is a mingle kind of fashion show. You see it here and there, you kind of guess what people have on, but I like what Walter has going on. It's really nice," says former New York Giant Tiki Barber.
