A deadline is looming for about 1,600 people who filed lawsuits claiming they have become ill because of dust from the World Trade Center.
They have until January 2 to decide whether to continue pursuing their claims in court or take a payout from the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund.
The federal government reopened the fund this year, setting aside more than $2.5 billion for health claims.
Applicants who choose the fund give up their right to sue.
Certain illnesses such as cancer are not covered by the fund, but victims hope those conditions can be covered in the future.
