Sarah D'Amico is everywhere at the New York City Lab School for Collaborative Studies in Chelsea. She's involved in more clubs, students organizations and sports than you would probably believe. But she says she doesn't do it for herself.

"It's just my way of sort of giving back and I've just loved my time that I've had here and I just want to make sure other people enjoy themselves as much as I do. And hopefully they do from anyway that I can help out," Sarah says.

"She will encourage people to go to class, she wants everybody in her class to graduate with her, and she really is remarkable for her humanity," says English teacher Heidi Slatkin.

Sarah's selflessness is constantly on display. As the president of the student government she's always organizing activities. She's the editor-in-chief of the yearbook. She's also a mentor to freshmen to help make them feel more comfortable in the often intimidating high school halls. But it's her work with the Gay-Straight Alliance that she is most proud of.

"People come together: It's not all gay kids, it's not all straight kids. It's somewhere we can talk about how we want to make a better community within our school," Sarah says.

"There's not self interest or self promotion behind all of the good hard work Sarah does for the lab school community," says the school's principal, Brooke Jackson.

Softball is Sarah's sport, and she's the most dominant pitcher in her division. She led the Gators to an undefeated regular season, striking out the side more often than not.

"The dedication and the speed and her accuracy, and practicing everyday on the weekends and during the summertime and being committed to being the best pitcher she could be," says softball coach Jessica Baptista.

Academics shouldn't be an afterthought either, she's of course an "A" student.

"She always is doing the work, and when I collect the work I will notice that on the homework, she's added notes to it to increase her understanding," says psychology teacher Kay Rothman.

It's no surprise that Sarah wants to make school into a career: She'll be studying elementary education at Vanderbilt in the fall and wants to become a teacher.

"I love everything about children, I love everything about education, about teaching kids to soar in the classroom but also just in the community," says Sarah.

So, for influencing nearly every aspect of life at her school, Sarah D'Amico is the latest HealthPlus Amerigroup NY1 Scholar Athlete of the Week.
