Despite being a three-sport athlete and facing challenging classes, this week's HealthPlus Amerigroup/NY1 Scholar Athlete still manages to find time to help her fellow students select the perfect college. NY1's Jon Weinstein filed the following report.
While most high school seniors are focused on figuring out which college they are going to attend, Shevanna Cole cares just as much about her fellow students’ futures as she does her own. Working tirelessly in the Cypress Hills Collegiate Prep college office, she lends her support to those hoping to find their way.
“I basically help students get to college,” Cole says. “I feel that helping students get to college will make a better community. If I was in a situation where I wanted help, I would want somebody to help me, so I feel like I should help others.”
Cole finds the time to assist others despite her fully-loaded schedule. She is an A student who works hard to avoid distraction from her academics.
“In the neighborhood that we are in, everybody falls under peer pressure and goes into other things, so staying motivated, staying focused and staying in school is my biggest thing,” Cole says.
Cole’s English teacher, Daisy Ramos, applauds her student’s ambitious attitude.
“Not everyone's motivated to strive and go further in life," Ramos says. "She's had her goals. She knows what she wants. She's a go-getter, so it's just natural. She's like, 'I know I'm going to rise up and beyond.'”
A three-sport athlete, Cole’s favorite sport is tennis. It started as a way to stay in shape for track but she became one of the team’s top players.
“She's very motivated and when she puts her mind to something, I believe she can accomplish it,” says Sammy Han, Cole’s tennis coach.
Cole derives her motivation to succeed from her parents and will be the first in her family to go to college.
“My mom and dad came up from Jamaica and it was like you have to do something, you have to make something of yourself," Cole says. "Don't waste your life on nothing."
Shevanna is headed to Skidmore College next year and plans to major in psychology. What she really wants to do for a career, though, is continue to give back to her community.
“I just feel like if I had the help that I can offer, I can better the next generations after me,” Cole says.
For planning to pay it forward, Shevanna Cole is the HealthPlus Amerigroup/NY1 Scholar Athlete of the Week.
