NY1 saluted the best and the brightest high school seniors at our annual Scholar Athlete Dinner Thursday night. NY1's Mara Montalbano filed the following report.

They come from all five boroughs and different high schools but they're all part of the 2012 class of Health Plus Amerigroup NY1 scholar athletes.

They were honored at a ceremony at the New York Stock Exchange Thursday night.

"I believe the reason I did so well in school was because of being on the swim team," said scholar athlete Edward Aminov. "It sort of focuses you. It gives you that determination."

"It's definitely been hard, but juggling academics and golf just made me a better person and helped shape the person I am today," said scholar athlete Sarah Soo-Hoo.

The scholar athletes excel in such sports as swimming, tennis, golf and volleyball, all while maintaining high grades. Some are even their class valedictorians.

For more than a decade NY1 has been profiling students who excel in academics and sports and has awarded nearly 400 scholarships.

"The wonderful thing about this program is that you're getting 30 different kids from all different cultures from the five boroughs and it's just a great mix," said NY1 Executive Sports Producer Marc Weingarten. "The New York City school system is showing that they have some of the brightest and best kids going out into the world."

With the help of Health Plus Amerigroup, each student received a $2,000 scholarship to help with their college education .

"This is not just about these students," said Bob Wychulis, the CEO of Health Plus Amerigroup. "It's about them showing people how to lead and how to be the best that you can be. This is inspirational not just for us but for all of the students in the New York area."

The sky is the limit for these students, who are attending colleges across the country. Some will travel as close as some CUNY schools, while some will travel as far away as the University of Hawaii. They have plans to become doctors, engineers and even an astronaut.

Nominate A Student

The NY1/Time Warner Cable Business Class Scholar Athlete program celebrates student athletes who successfully combine academics with athletics, and also find time for community service. The program, operated in conjunction with the New York City Department of Education, is open to any senior attending a New York City public high school.

Each week of the school year, a selected student is profiled on NY1 and receives a partial scholarship to the school they choose to attend in the fall.

To apply, download and print out the official Scholar Athlete application, then mail it to the address on the form.
