A doctor in Puerto Rico says former boxing champ Hector "Macho" Camacho has died.

Camacho's mother made the decision to take him off life support Saturday after three more of his sons arrived in Puerto Rico to see him one last time.

The 50-year-old had been declared brain dead after he was shot in the face, and his childhood friend was killed, as the two men sat in a car Tuesday night.

Camacho trained for years at the legendary Gleason's gym in Brooklyn.

Those who knew him there remembered Camacho as a flamboyant fighter who loved to put on a show as well as mentor younger fighters.

"Hector was some one that came back to Gleason's when he was in New York," said Bruce Silverglade, the owner of Gleason's Gym. "I considered him a friend. He was someone that I could call upon whenever I needed a champion or a fighter to go to a school or go to a hospital."

Camacho was raised in East Harlem and worked his way up through the boxing circuit. He held world titles in multiple weight classes in the 1980s and '90s.
