East Harlem Groups Rally Ahead Of Debate
Community leaders and everyday New Yorkers spoke out Tuesday morning on what they would like to hear during the first televised debate between Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his opponent, Comptroller Bill Thompson. NY1's Roger Clark filed the following report.

Representatives from East Harlem community groups gathered Tuesday morning in front of the Museo del Barrio to send a message to the candidates before the mayoral debate.

"We want the issues to be out there, to be discussed," said Jaime Estades of the Listen to East Harlem Residents Ad Hoc Committee.

"We're being squeezed out with all of this development that is happening. Listen, I'm for economic development, don't get me wrong, but not on the backs of our people," said Community Activist Carmen Quinones.

The concern among many is that neighborhoods like East Harlem are being forgotten on the campaign trail.

"We want to make sure that while you're here, you recognize that you've got to deal and tackle the issues that are local, because they will have a better effect on making the entire city stronger," said Community Board 11 member Robert Rodriguez.

"The budget is important, numbers are important, but when there is a conflict between numbers and people, you have to look at the people," said Henry Calderon of the East Harlem Chamber of Commerce.

Other residents in East Harlem suggested a variety of topics Mayor Bloomberg and Comptroller Bill Thompson could discuss during their debate.

"I just want to hear more about education. I have two daughters, I need them to have the best education possible," said one East Harlem resident.

"Of course housing for middle income people, probably the number one issue, and of course quality education is another issue," said another East Harlem resident.

One resident NY1 spoke with said he just hopes the debate will offer up a few answers about the men running for mayor.
