A new exhibit at the School of Visual Arts in Chelsea is paying homage to the 40-year career of the school's advertising and graphic design chair. NY1's Roger Clark filed the following report.

Richard Wilde took a stroll Monday through a new exhibition named for him at the School of Visual Arts, filled with work from many of his former students.

"Viewing this work is actually mind-boggling, I haven't truly digested it yet," Wilde said.

The exhibition is called "The Wilde years: four decades of shaping visual culture" and is currently on display at the school's gallery on West 26th Street. It celebrates Wilde's 40 years at SVA, and the designers, art directors and other creative professionals who graduated from the advertising and graphic design department he chairs.

"We wanted to really give the impression of how all of this work impacted us in everyday life," said Exhibition Designer Kevin O'Callaghan.

The work includes magazine covers, subway ads in a room that makes you feel like you are in a station, book jackets and music videos.

"He's had such a tremendous influence because, being in New York, which really influences the rest of the world, in addition to just the duration of his chairmanship," said DDB Worldwide Group Creative Director Lisa Rettig-Falcone.

The creations of more than 100 alumni of the school are on display. Wilde says it gives visitors a chance to really take in some of the images that they perhaps walk or drive by during daily life.

"Here they are put in an interesting context where you do stop, you do kind of digest each piece, at least I do, and there is something very invigorating about that for me, I get excited about simply being here," Wilde said.

The exhibition is free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.sva.edu.
