The Brooklyn Navy Yard will be creating hundreds of green jobs with the help of a one-million-dollar state grant.
Governor David Paterson was at the Navy Yard today to make the announcement.
The funding is part of $8 million in grants aimed at spurring growth and supporting small businesses. That includes $2.9 million toward the renovation of the Apollo Theater, and a $800,000 grant to the Brooklyn Brewery, which is expanding its facility in Williamsburg.
"In the next few weeks, we'll hopefully get a shovel in the ground to begin that expansion, which will increase our capacity, our brewing capacity in Brooklyn, by six times what it is now,” said Brooklyn Brewery President and Founder Steve Hindy. “We'll be increasing our employment by about 50 percent over the next couple of years. We hope to expand our tours from just weekends to every day."
The Brooklyn Navy Yard, meanwhile, will develop a Green Manufacturing Center that will employ 300 full-time workers.
