With the holiday season in full swing, the city is hoping to draw shoppers to neighborhoods they might traditionally overlook, including Harlem. NY1's Ty Milburn filed the following report.

The stress of holiday shopping in Harlem was made a little bit easier on Sunday when business owners from more than three dozen shops, boutiques and restaurants set up shop under one roof.

"It's fantastic to be able to get your work out and see what you're doing and what you're all about. So it's good to be here," said Harlem business owner Diane Davis.

The shopping bazaar called "Harlem for the Holidays" was sponsored by the tourism group NYC and Company. The goal is to highlight some of the unique businesses located in Harlem and encourage the residents and people all over the city to consider doing some of their holiday shopping uptown.

"It's everything. What I love most is when people come from Downtown and other parts of the world and they're so surprised by the services and products that we have here and it just brings more people," said Barbara Bullard of Al Johnson Art.

For business owners, the bazaar served as a chance to see old friends, check out the competition and be surrounded by other entrepreneurs who are all hoping for strong holiday sales.

"The economy is bad now, but I think spirits are very high," said one Harlem business owner.

For curious shoppers, it was a chance to check some names off their list while shopping locally.

"The money stays in the community. Whatever we can do to help that, I like that. And I have already spent a lot of money," said one shopper.

"It's a lot of fun. A chance to see what's going on in the neighborhood and see what types of crafts and products are being sold," said another shopper.

Based on turnout, "Harlem for the Holidays" was a big success that local business owners hope will boost sales this holiday season.

The Harlem Holiday Bazaar runs until 5 p.m. Sunday at the Hip Hop Culture Center at 124th Street and Frederick Douglas.
