Senator Charles Schumer called for a crackdown Sunday on double ATM fees as more consumers are taking out cash during the holiday season.

Schumer called on Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke to address the problem of the double fees when consumers are trying to withdraw money.

According to a study conducted by Bankrate.com, 72 percent of banks charge customers a fee when they take money out from another bank's ATM.

In addition, the consumer is paying the owner of the ATM a fee as well.

The study also shows ATM fees rising 13 percent -- higher than last year -- averaging $2.2 per transaction.

Schumer said he hopes to see better ATM fees in place by the Christmas holiday.
